International Master's Degree in Reconstructive Microsurgery

Microsurgery gathers a set of microsurgical techniques such as vascular anastomosis, lymphatic microsuture and neurorrhaphies. Due to the advances of the anatomical knowledge and the technological development, microsurgery has become the basis of all tissue transfer techniques and the main axis of the advanced reconstruction.

During the last 10 years the exponential growth of microsurgical techniques particularly in the field of plastic surgery, clearly indicates that specific training is needed in this area and skilled microsurgical team is indispensable in all major hospitals.

The fifth edition of the International Master's Degree in Reconstructive Microsurgery starts next September.

It lasts two years and is accredited with 90 ECTS (European Credits Transfer System). The program has the best international faculty with an experienced career based on excellence.

The Master's program consists of a face-to-face part and supervised distance learning with an educational program divided into 11 modules that let you learn microsurgical techniques of breast reconstruction, head and neck, lower extremities and surgical treatment of lymphedema.

After the modules, students have to do a clinical immersion program in one of the hospitals in collaboration with the Master such as the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, the Queen Victoria Hospital (UK), the Institut Gustave Roussy (France), the Helsinki University Hospital (Finland), the Taipei Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (Taiwan), the New York Medical Center (United States), among others.

During this period, the students deal with medical staff, they are involved in the surgeries and also in the other activities of healthcare assistance.

The International Master's Degree in Reconstructive Microsurgery is organized by the Plastic Surgery Department at the Hospital del Mar-Hospital de Sant Pau and is accredited by the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Emphasis is given to practical skills in microsurgical techniques, but this will include diagnosis, therapeutic options, decision-making concerning techniques, and recognition and management of risks and complications. Students will be available to work as plastic surgeons when they finish the Master's Degree.
